Is there a program that allows the Macbook to stay connected to the wireless network so I don't have to wait for it to reconnect and give me issues?

Obviously, when you close it it's like logging off. I hate that.

Is there a way besides insomnia to keep the internet connected to Wifi when closed?

Yes... sort of. You will experience disconnection/sleep momentarily after you close the lid. BUT, if you have a wireless mouse connected you can "wake" the Mac back up by moving the mouse around. I've noticed with my particular MBP (mid-2008) that it works best when I wait about 10 seconds after closing the lid before attempting to wake it up. There are some pretty affordable wireless mice out there. The cheaper ones are going to have a USB receiver that you have to plug into your MB. There are BlueTooth mice, but they are more expensive of course.
