Just registered, and thanks to all for being here.

I recently upgraded my imac from Tiger to Snow Leopard. Every thing is fine
except for a bouncing icon when I open System Preferences. I have to force quit, and reopen. This doesn't happen every time I open System Preferences, but enough to question why this might be happening. Anybody know what the problem might be, and how I may correct it? Thanks again...

If you did an upgrade, it's possible that there is an incompatible system preferences pane that is causing issues. Did you have any system preference panes that were installed as per your own actions (whether they were installed as part of a program you installed or whether you installed the pane yourself)?

Have you tried opening System Preferences as a 32-bit application? Right click it > Get Info and check "Open in 32 bit mode".

Hint: I have one such pane, and fortunately it hasn't been a pain. Anyway, it was placed in the System Preferences Window under the heading of Other. Do you have any such category?

Thanks vansmith. Let me clarify that I wiped Tiger, and did a fresh install of Snow Leopard. As far as the Right click > Get Info > "Open in 32 bit mode" goes, all I have is a grayed out Locked box. Hope this helps, and thanks again.

I'm going to assume that the option is greyed out because you aren't using a 64-bit Mac. What Mac do you have?

Try the following:
1. Open up Terminal (/Applications/Utilities)
2. Type the following and press enter:
Code:
open -a /Applications/System\ Preferences.app
When SP crashes, do you get anything printed to the Terminal?

Did you enter it exactly as I posted? If it says "Preferences.app" does not exist, you have mistyped it. ;)

Alright, must of entered it correctly this time, because I got the spinning beach ball for a few seconds and got the next command line. Nothing else, thanks. I'll check any further replies from you, or anyone else for that matter later because I gotta go to work. Have a good one...

I upgraded to 10.6.4, and I had to Force Quit System Preferences for the update to complete. Other than that, everything else seems to be OK.

I'm trying to avoid making a call to Apple for this issue, because my Apple Care has run out. So, any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...
