Need Help with choosing an external hard drive for Ibook

Wanted to know if you could use any external drive for a ibook ... my hard drive on the ibook dont show up when im trying to install os so i would like to buy a external drive would that work and how do that work Please Help ..
Im not too familiar with Macs Thanks
