Mail: no messages in Sent or Trash folders

I have a co-worker that has Mac Mail version 2.1.3, and after setting up his new (IMAP) email account, he can receive and send email just fine, but there are no messages in his Trash or Sent folders??? Any idea how to fix this?

The current version of Mac Mail is 4.2. Tell him to upgrade to see if that resolves the problem.

is there a way to upgrade to the latest version of Mail without upgrading the OS??
