Mail on the iPad questions/concerns

Basically, I've noticed the Mail app on iPad is very lack luster. Either that, or I'm missing a lot of features for some reason. First off, I should mention I have Gmail and Hotmail set up in the Mail App. I have these same ones on my MBP and have full functionality on the MBP and I am not experiencing any of the same issues there that I have on the iPad.

1. When composing an e-mail, I cannot type a word, highlight it and then make it a hyperlink. Is there a way to do this?? (pasting a full URL will send a long link, but I want only one word to represent the entire URL/link)

2. When composing an e-mail, I see no way to make a word italic, bold, or make any other font changes. Is there a way to do this??

Is it just me? Or is it the type of e-mail accounts I'm using??? Would it be any different with Entourage or MobileMe?

Nope, nothing to do with it. It's just a plain jane app at this point. What you don't see is what you don't get I'm afraid.
