I just upgraded from a macbook running 10.5 to a macbook pro running 10.6 With my old macbook, I could run my external CRT at 1600x1200@70Hz (or even 75 Hz). Now the highest it will let me go is 65Hz, which my monitor doesn't like and 60Hz is just painful on the eyes.

I've dropped down to 1280x1024 for now, but I would really like to know what I can do. I've tried SwitchResX, but 1600x1200 won't activate after a reboot.

Has anyone had success running at this rate? Anyone know why it won't for me?

[edit]Clarification: There is just no option in the menu to run at over 65Hz

Your Mac's Specs
2.8 GHz 15" MacBook Pro OS X 10.7.x & some old Macs
Tell us exactly which two Mac laptops are you talking about. The model specifications is what I'm asking for. There are a lot of Mac laptops that use 10.5 and 10.6.

Without further information my guess is that your older laptop has a better graphics card but if it's really a MacBook and not a Pro then that wouldn't be the answer. Usually it's the graphics card that is the main reason why you can or cannot use a higher refresh rate at higher resolutions.

I'm at work right now; I'll post more details tonight:

The non-working (newer) laptop one is a 13" MacbookPro bought a few weeks after this years update.

The working one is a white macbook from January 2009.

The CRT is a Sun branded 19"

The monitor is a Sun-branded CMU751U. A little googling seems to show it as being manufactured by Hitachi

The more I look the more I think it's a dot-clock issue. Unfortunately I can't find *any* information on the dot-clock of the GeForce 320M, so I can't confirm this. It is really crummy that my bottom-of-the-line macbook from almost 2 years ago had a higher dot-clock then my pro that is only a month old. I guess Apple figures nobody uses CRTs anymore?
