help connecting my macbook pro to my sony bravia

ok so i have a 13inch macbook pro and a 40 in sony bravia and i would loveeeee to connect them. my TV has a VGA port so i bought the mini display port to VGA adapter for my mac. when i got home i plugged them both in and all that came up on my tv was the purple stars background that the macs have, nothing else, but thats not even my background. ive searched the internet and i cant find any help. can someone PLEASEEEE help me i dont wanna waste 30 bucks of money i already dont have. I really appercaite the help
