I know it doesn't really matter, but sometimes it irks me slightly when I see "viri" or "virii" in a post. :p
I'm only basing this off of the dictionary that comes installed on my Mac, but see for yourself the correct plural of "virus". I don't care what you type, I just felt like pointing this out for no particular reason. So take it with a grain of salt. ;D

Being from a Latin backgroud, the plural of words ending in 'us' is 'i' hence viri!

I am familiar with that pluralization of latin words, (cactus, cacti) and virus is of latin origin.
Are there, however, any exceptions to that? I know when I type "viri" or "virii" those little red dotted lines show up under the words meaning they are misspelled. So, maybe there's a reason for that??

LOL mispelled according to whose dictionary? Half the words one uses in the Oxford Concise are mispelled according to American Dictionaries! Even mispelled wants to be reported as misspelt or some such!

Well Charlie I attended a seminar in Phoenix Az in 1994 at the Hyatt Regency where presenters argued the US could not afford to go metric and I often think our pollies only went that way to appease our (Asian) neighbours but don't tell anyone I said that!

Wikipedia said:
The word is from the Latin virus referring to poison and other noxious substances, first used in English in 1392.[9] Virulent, from Latin virulentus (poisonous), dates to 1400.[10] A meaning of "agent that causes infectious disease" is first recorded in 1728,[9] before the discovery of viruses by Dmitry Ivanovsky in 1892. The adjective viral dates to 1948.[11] The term virion is also used to refer to a single infective viral particle. The plural is "viruses".

The plural virii, though common, is generally considered to be incorrect, and based on a misunderstanding of Latin. There is no plural for the Latin word virus; using the native English pluralisation rules, to yield viruses, would arguably then be most correct.

I know doctors also refer to them as viruses, it seems to mostly be know-it-all nerds (no offense harry :)) that insist on using virii.

Oh and conservatives in Arizona in 1994 argued against the metric system? Shocker! ;)

Viruses.

According to something I have read, IT savvy people started using virii to sound "elite"

Type viruses, viri , and virii into OS X and the only correct one OS X should see would be viruses.

Read the usage section:
virii - Wiktionary

I have to admit, I'm partial to "viruses" as well, although recently I also have been thinking about what would be the more appropriate usage.

All I know is, Steve Jobs seems like a ... fun guy.

(Sorry, I just had to say that.)

Plural of virus? Lotsa virus!

The French gave us the metric system - and I for one am eternally grateful. Why, even the Brits and Americans can't agree about what constitutes a gallon! It's largely about nationalism, plus perhaps a soupçon of xenophobia ;).

Let alone a litre or two! And let's not get into tons, UK 2240 lbs, short tons US 2000lbs and tonnes 1000 kilograms!
