Hugh, I was trying at one time to find the same Pioneer as you for my iMac G5 till I read the reviews. The Thin Pioneer drive seems even more troublesome than the Panasonic one in the iMac. It was a bit more also so I just replaced it with another one from OWC. This one works better than the original did from the day I bought the iMac!

Not sure why on the thin Pioneer drive but I was shocked how many people were having issues. Normally Pioneer drives are first rate.

Just a heads up.

If I can find the URL for the Pioneer I will PM you or post it here.

You also might want to consider an external USB dvd drive: cheaper and easier…

Thanks for posting the info about the reviews. I certainly wasn't aware of it.

I seem to recall the Pioneer as a K106 or 107, some number like that. I'd search further if I wasn't stuck with dialup at present.

When I think more about it, OWC has such a sound reputation for what it sells for Mac, that the fact it isn't promoting Pioneer as its optical drive of choice for the G5 iMac speaks volumes!

Aptmunich's advice is well worth considering, just be sure it's firewire rather than USB - or dual if desired. Once again, OWC sells what's best for Mac.
I wish I had a $ for every time I've promoted OWC, I could buy a new Mac! :D
