Changing iCal default alarms

Why can't I find anywhere to change the default alarm details for any 'to do' item I add to my iCal?
By default the alarm is set to 11.45pm and 'message'.
Who needs reminded of their to do items at 11.45pm each night???!?!!!

Is there any way to set the details of any new to do item added to a more user friendly set of parameters?

Also is there any way to change default details when adding an appointment into iCal?
