DVD only burns 2 GB on a 4.7 GB disc?

My DVD burner in my MacBook Pro now tells me that there is insufficient space on a 4.7 GB DVD to even burn 2 GB! I have tried multiple DVDs and many different files. The finder shows that the DVD is the correct capacity, but any file over 2 GB, it says there is insufficient space to burn it. Any ideas why?
