Ejecting HDMI cable from macbook pro

I hook my mac up to the tv via an mini-display port to HDMI cable and am wondering if there is a proper way I should eject that cable when done, or if I can simply pull it out??

if im not mistaken i read a post in the past about this and it said to put the mac to sleep then pull out the cable.. if i find it i will repost..
