My friend gave me some files that ran on his PC but they won't work for my mac. Is there any way to turn the .mds file into an .iso or .dmg so it'll work on my Mac?

What exactly is the software/contents of that image? There may be a chance that they don't work with OS X. As for opening them, should you know that they will be of use, you should be able to simply rename the extension to iso. Once this is done, your image should be mountable.

I tried renaming it, and my Mac recognized it, but when I tried to mount, it said there was a failure to mount the .iso.

What exactly is in the image? Can your friend not send it to you/give it to you in a more usable format?
