You may also want to take a look at NeoOffice which is a little more geared to the Mac. Open Office is more geared to the PC as a Microsoft alternative.

im in the same boat as you, op. i just got my new mbp for school yesterday and its kicking my butt. im slowly figuring stuff out though. and my mac expert in the store recommended iwork over office because he said it had the same functionality but was alot cheaper.

NeoOffice = OpenOffice with a Java-based front-end. IMO, NeoOffice was rendered mostly irrelevant once OpenOffice introduced a native user interface.
