Looking for alternative to WORD

I am trying to find a word-processing program that is less structured and more writer-friendly than WORD. I have tried Scrivener and like it very much. The only problem is that I tend to write footnotes (sometimes bulky) as I compose my text, and with Scrivener there is no way to conceal them. The result is a nice text broken up by lots large grey boxes, which sort of destroys the entire effect I was looking for.

Can anyone recommend an alternative word-processing program that has a better facility than Scrivener for writing/concealing footnote references?

Thanks!

Open Office or NeoOffice are both well regarded and free. Find and download...

MacWorld recently did a quick overview on word processor programs for the Mac. They listed 10 of them which also included Scrivener. I just searched for the article but couldn't find it or would link you to it. Do a search at the MacWorld site and see if you can find it.

Regards.

Mellel is a word processor that is specifically designed with writers in mind. You should certainly check that one out.
