When I open a video file, the file opens fine and plays, but when I expand the video to play in full screen mode, my entire screen turns snowy, and even when I close out the file, the rest of my computer stays this way.

I have used both Quicktime and VLC (my normal 'go-to' player), and have played AVIs as well as MKVs - the same result for every file and player.

A quick restart does, however, alleviate the snowy-screen.

Any ideas?

Probably a video driver problem. For example, I've had a lot of problems with flash video crashing my system with hardware acceleration enabled on the high end ATI graphics cards before some hotfixes were made.
Reinstall the video drivers and see if this helps.

If this doesn't help, please describe what exactly do you mean by "snowy screen".
