I didn't read the article, but if it's true...

The cost will likely be coming out of a extra fee or higher tuition that will be difficult for students to opt out of. At my college, we were required to purchase powerbook g4's (at a slightly discounted rate) which I believe were refurbished. My battery was -done- within 2 years.

It's too bad, because these products should be optional instead of mandatory.
(although I didn't read the article!)
