itunes wont let me add music, cause the external hd is windows format

when i switched from pc to mac, i just hooked up my old external hd and ran itunes from it. But now it wont let me add any music to the hd from the mac, it says i cant make changes. Please help i don't know what to do without just reformating and loosing all my musi
