Hi all

This is my first post so thanks in advance for any advice that comes my way :)

Recently bought a second-hand MBP 15" 2.4 (MA896) but the owner doesn't have the original DVI-VGA adapter. Hence my question: which adapter or cable should I go for?

I'm convinced it's normal DVI but a lot of ads (ebay, Amazon, etc) seem to mix this up with mini-DVI/displayport, etc - so I'm a bit confused.

Currently running a desktop PC to a 22" LG W2242S, and would like the MBP to run the max res possible (1920x1080 if possible, but 1680x1050 would suffice). Would an adapter be okay, or should I buy the whole cable?

I'm UK based and found the following adapter on ebay: Original Apple DVI Male to VGA Adapter Cable UK SELLER on eBay (end time 14-May-10 01:08:50 BST) - am waiting for seller to confirm if this'll work.

Any ideas? Thanks again in advance.

SJP

EDIT: the above adapter is an Apple DVI to VGA Adapter Cable (PN: 603-3342)

Your MBP does indeed have the standard DVI port.

If you have a VGA cable already, the adapter will be fine.

Your resolution will depend on the TV - Many HDTVs do not allow full resolution through their VGA ports. I have not looked this one up, but LG should have a list of the resolutions supported via VGA in the Owner's Manual.

I would suggest you check it out prior to getting the adapter as you may want to reconsider and use DVI to HDMI instead. With a HDMI into the TV, you'll also need to verify which port it will require you to use for the audio to work.

Thanks bobtomay

The LG is an LCD monitor, not a TV. I guess that now you've confirmed the adapter will work fine with a (female) VGA cable (which I have) then I might well get the minimum 1680x1050 res I'm looking for.

Thanks
