Can I transfer files from my iMac to my Macbook using a firewire cable?

MBP 15" Late 2011 2.2ghz i7, 8GB RAM, 128GB OCZ-VERTEX4 SSD, 500GB SATA HD
Is this as straight forward as I think or do I have to get a pice of software that would let me do this

27 iMac+Thunderbolt, iMac 21,
Start iMac in Target mode < power on then hold T key > and with it connected to MB by Firewire the iMac HD will pop up on MB desktop. you can open it up and drag out files and folders as needed.
If you want an exact bootable copy then use Superduper or if just want to import user/s data you can use Migration Assistant in Applications > Utilities folder.
