You state "manufacturer's install disks". Is this the Snow Leopard DVD set with iLife? Or, are these DVDs specific for a particular machine. In other words, are they the retail version or machine specific version of Snow Leopard? It sounds like they may be machine specific and that's why they're being rejected. Let us know.

Regards.

check the Install DVD's and see if there are any fingerprints or smudges. If so clean them but be careful. Don't go in a circle. Clean from the inside to the outside.

If every other CD or DVD you own reads then that is all I can think of.

actually the "manufacturer install DVD" came with the Macbook Pro i bought from bestbuy back in 2008.

on the other hand, I bought Snow Leopard DVD 3 days ago to upgrade to 10.6

i did try to clean the disks, nothing changed. a guy at the apple store told me I have a faulty optical lense.

I will try to install using firewire procedure.

step 1: save dvd into .iso format (or shall I just install from .dmg format?)
step 2: move to firewire external HDD
step 3: back up my system
step 4: install Snow Leopard.

please let me know if that is correct

Try cleaning the optical drive first. Buy a cleaning kit from Best Buy, Radio Shack, Office Depot, or any other store which sells computer accessories. If the cleaning doesn't work, then I would try what Zoolook recommended.
