Just tried fitting an ATI RADEON 9600 Pro in the G5 but all I get is a blank screen. It's connected correctly and apparently is compatible with the G5 model, here's a link to more info about the card -

ATI RADEON® 9600 Pro, (256 MB) AGP Video Graphic Card on eBay (end time 27-Apr-10 22:14:36 BST)

The old GeForce FX 5200 worked ok before so I guess it's not the mac.
Any info appreciated.

Where there any Mac drivers on the CD.. Put the old card back in and see. Most likely its a PC card..someone around here will know if you can flash the firmware on the card. This why you should buy Mac stuff from Ebay stores that deal in just Mac. Pulls from Macs.

It was advertised as pc and mac compatible, but after checking the cd it seems there are no mac files! Looks like it's going back. Cheers for the reply.

You never said if this video card is new or used. If it's used it could be broken or "dead"...if new it could be defective.

I have a Radeon 9600 Pro in my G5...and it works fine.

And a Radeon 9600 does not have a fan unit. The card is silent and cool. I think you have been sold something else such as a failed 9800 as the seller talks about replacing the fan unit and nowhere does it say it is the Mac Pro version.

The 9600 came in three versions, PC, Mac and a PC and Mac compatible.

Like Harry said this is not a Macintosh 9600 Pro.

Most definitely because of the fan...but also:

- if you look between the two video ports in the photo...there is a little square metallic box/cube. This is the housing for a serial port between the two video ports. It's been a very long time since a Macintosh video card had a serial port on it...but this is very common on Windows video cards.

- this card is red. I do not think the Macintosh 9600 Pro came in red. Mine is the "typical" green color

- lastly. The e-Bay seller's description would lead you to believe that this card is compatible with Mac OS X, Windows XP, and Windows 2000. I don't think that I've seen a Mac video card that is compatible with both the Mac OS X and the Windows OS at the same time (without being "flashed").

The 9600 Mac and PC card used some time ago in a MDD was in fact red Nick and fitted both Windows and Macs.

Well I guess I stand corrected.

That was certainly a fairly unusual card in that it was programed to work (out of the box) on both a Windows & Mac computer.

The 9600 Pro in my G5 is green...so I guess maybe they came in different colors. Maybe the Mac only 9600 Pro was green & the Mac/PC card was red.

Thanks Harry,

- Nick

Thanks for the replies, all I could go on was the description saying it would work with the G5. I'd done quite a comprehensive search for the best card to fit my older mac and this seemed to be the best option! Anyone know where I can get this card or better other than ebay as I can't buy new anymore? It's always too complicated!

Depends on who or whom you buy the card from on eBay. Have sent you a PM re a reliable eBay dealer in HK.

No 9600's available at the moment, will keep checking.
Had a reply from the the Ebay seller I bought the incorrect card from, he wants me to pay 10% of the final auction price because he'll have to list it again! With postage that would mean I'm £14 down because of his listing error. Thought I'd seen it all!

Sorry, that is not fair at all. He listed the card as for a G5. It's not. OWC used to have the proper 9600 for the G5 but no longer do, but they do not have a fan like has been said. I would complain to ebay.

steveball you should start a dispute with eBay as that is his problem he has advertised faulty, inaccurately described goods. If you paid with PayPal you can start a 'goods not as described' action. Personally think you are being tried out!

dtravis7 - thanks for the link, helpful info.
After my last message to ebay guy he decided to offer a full refund minus postage so I'm sending it back. May buy a slightly newer mac with the card already installed!
Cheers for all the info.
