My guess would be the video card is beginning to fail.

Sorry, don't have much more to offer.

You could pull out your original OS X discs and run the Apple Hardware test.

like bobtomay said this resembles somthing usually called video artifacts, signs of either of the following:
-video adapter driver failing
-video card overheating

Just to make sure, try to reinstall the latest video drivers and get an app to check board temperatures, look for GPU temp.
