Hello,

I recently acquired an IMac G3 to use with an old Nikon scanner that is incompatible with Mac OS 10.x.

The G3 came with OS 10.4 installed. So I bought OS 9.4 on EBay and went ahead and installed it in the hope of running both systems as and when required. Unfortunately, I did the usual 'man thing' of not referring to the manual until I got into trouble, and that's when I realised I had done the install incorrectly. I am now stuck in OS 9.4, but can see the original OS 10.4 and other applications are in a folder called 'Original Items', so I presume I can restore the original 10.4. Am I correct in my presumption, and if so, could someone kindly advise how to do so?

Kindest regards,

Sfothers

Welcome to Mac-Forums!

I need to ask ... OS 9.4? The last OS 9 issued was 9.2.1, upgradeable via Apple site to 9.2.2. Does the OS 9 disk have a large gold/yellow coloured 9 on its upper face? Which model of G3 iMac is it?

OS 10.4 included OS 9.2 (called Classic). The Nikon software *should* (emphasis) kick Classic into life (even though you cannot boot the G3 into OS 9 mode).

To restore OS 10.4 (Tiger), you will need the retail install disk - black colour. G3 computers were not issued with OS X restore disks (grey), although the very last iMac G3 models could be loaded with OS 10.0.x (Cheetah).

Yea, 10.4 had classic and will boot into 9.2 - 9.4 does not exist.

Also would need the OS 9 drivers to be installed, not 100% sure but think in installing 10.4 one has the option of installing OS 9 drivers - the box has to be checked.
