I don't have an office, but I wanted to set up a VPN with my home network. I have debian linux pc. I have no idea how to go about this and I would like to be able to access my network and files from elsewhere on my mac.

sorry if I am confusing people what I want, and also sorry if this can not be done.

There are 2 ways you can do this.

1: Install PPTPD (PoPToP) server on your Debian machine. You should be able to apt-get install PPTPD. You should also see the instructions at http://www.poptop.org/. It will involve patching PPPD I believe which will enable you to setup user accounts in a chap-secrets file.

The instructions are pretty good and have Debian specific examples. You then just need to use OS X built in PPTP client to connect to your Debian box.

2: SSH. Both OS X and Debian (All Linux) come with SSH. This is an encrypted tunnel to the command line. I have setup VNC to tunnel through the SSH tunnel. http://www.phy.cam.ac.uk/cavendish/computing/information/VNC_and_SSH.htm

You can also use a program like http://www.rbrowser.com/ to transfer files over SSH.
