I saved one days work throughout the day as a .doc. When I shut the document down I could not re-open it and I received a prompt that the document was in the wrong format or that I had lost some data.

The document “Product Liability-3.doc” could not be opened. The file is not in the right format.
Or could be lost, truncated or in the wrong format.

I have tried nearly everything -

I am using Mac OS X (10.5.8)
Anyone know how I can get around this one.
Thanks

Can you view it with preview (select the document and hit space)?

Nah,
just tried that - I am looking at a blank page - while my other docs are showing text. Incidentally when I look at the size of the document it is showing up as 68KB which is about right.
Also - it is saved as Word 97 Format (doc)
Thanks

If u have access to iWork open it in Pages and then use Save As to put it back to .doc
There are the choices in File > Export

Click for full size

In that case i would try Text Edit - if it wont open in that then it may well be corrupted.

All I did going along was to continue to save the file that I was working on - I didn't save the file to any external back-up.
Do you think it may be backed up somewhere in the system??
Thanks

Were you using Office 2008? I had something similar happen before I ran all the crazy Microsoft updates. I lost an entire Excel project - two weeks of work. After the crash the file was of size 0.
If you want, you can PM me and send the file to me, I'll see if I can un-currupt it.
I feel for you, man. I've been down this road.

Hey,
that would be great if you could do that.
I have attached it -
If you get to open it - you can have a marvellous read all about Irish Law of Tort in relation to product liability.
Much appreciated for the offer

Opened fine for me in NeoOffice. I saved it as an .rtf file that should open in just about any word processor. Can't get the file to upload with that extent, though, so I renamed it to .txt and it's here. Download it, rename to .rtf and see if you can get it into your word processor.

Hey,
Jakerich and dtravis7 - you are stars - I opened my document in its entirety - all intact.
You have just saved me two days work - and exams only two weeks away.
Thanks for your time and interest.

No. You have to do it. I'm guessing that now, you will.

Actually, on any recent Mac you should have already set up Time Machine, and thus your work (and anything else you've changed) is being backed up to an external drive on an hourly basis.

It's fantastic for situations like this, so if you're not already doing it, START DOING IT!

I am not and I will from here on in - you wouldn't mind but I have the external hard-drive sitting looking at me.
Good lesson though for me and for all of you who are not backing up.
You just feel like tearing your hair out!!

Hey,
ran into the same problem - but downloaded NeoOffice 3.0.2 - that Jakerich mentioned - and bingo - worked like a dream.
So good learning experience!!
How important are the patches??

Just for the info, OpenOffice is what I used to convert that for you. I used to recommend NeoOffice till Open Office came out with a native version that did not need X11 for OSX. Now I use OpenOffice.
