As long as you still have a warranty and there are no signs that the machine was dropped you should be ok.

The only "for sure" way to know if you're covered..is take it to the store & see what they say.

Usually hinge damage like that is from forcing the display open to a greater angle than it was designed for...unless there is some sort of design or materials flaw.

Hopefully it's covered!:)

thanks for that info...I have never forced my display in a way you describe. I set up an appointment for the Genius Bar already

Yes...nobody EVER accidentally forces their laptop display open more than it should be!;) But honestly this is exactly how a majority of hinge cracks occur (unless like I said earlier if there is some sort of defect or materials problem).

But the important thing is hopefully Apple will take care of it under the warranty. Please let us know how things go. Always interesting to hear how Apple handles these issues.

I've had two friends who have had unibody macbook's repaired under warranty for the same issue, you should be fine.
