I can't seem to find a way to get the pics from my iPhone's camera roll to my chosen directory on my computer without using iPhoto. I don't really use iPhoto at all unless I need to import pictures. Is there another way to do this?

Picasa will import them to wherever you would like.

I'm looking for a way the OS will allow me to do it without having to download any additional software. Like is there a way I can get it to show my iPhone images in the Finder window or pop up my iPhone in the Finder's sidebar, etc.?

Makes sense. This caused me to find the Import function in Preview and it is easier and takes less time for me to import my pictures using Preview than iPhoto. Thanks. ;)

Didn't even know it had that function. Good work!

importing iPhone pictures

Just load "Image Capture" programme while your iphone is connected to your MAC (to load use spotlight (cmd+spacebar))
You will see all iphone photos in image capture.
At the bottom of page you will find the destination option, change it to any location (includes "other" that takes you to your hard disk etc) and then import. simple
