How slow/fast will 3g be when it comes?

Read that 3g can be painfully slow. Since I've never used 3g and I have a 3g iPad on order, I love to know if this is accurate or an exaggeration. Thanks.

A 3G stick in a conventional Mac can be decent. Why not the Ipad?

Maybe the 3G bottleneck is part network and part slow iphone processing?
