I have an iMac with OS 9.1. I plan to use it for debugging via FireWire using the program fwkpfv as suggested on the darwin list (see "man fwkpfv"). I'm not familiar with OS 9 and I can't see how to bring up the Terminal window. Does anyone know how to do that?

OS 9 doesn't have a terminal app or any command line interface, from what I know.

The two 2001 iMacs had processors ranging from 400 - 600, possibly 700 (rare nowadays); and original drive sizes from 10 - 60 Gb. [source: Mactracker]
Tiger did appear on CDs, but finding - and affording - them is the major issue. You could try an external firewire drive to boot the iMac using a Tiger dvd (hard to locate). You could also boot your iMac with another Mac/Tiger as startup, using Target mode.

Can you please tell me more about Target mode ... do I setup my MacBook Pro that way? Do you have a reference on how to do that with Firewire?

I think we're narrowing down the specs of your iMac. I believe it's the early 2001 model, and the ROM version suggests to me that you will need to update the firmware to 7.5.1. You can do so with MacTracker http://mactracker.ca/ where a link is provided at the base of the page pertaining to that model of iMac.
That HD icon Info should show you the HD's capacity, as well as how much space is still available.

Basically, plug in the firewire cable to both Macs, your MBP is the 'host', the iMac is the 'target'. [If it doesn't work, some suggest trying things the other way, ie. make the MBP the target.]

As I see it, you'll need to use the iMac itself to download the update from the Mactracker link. That iMac may have browser software already installed, in which case you can use it, but you may be limited to dialup, depending on what modem the iMac has inside. You could always try the iMac's ethernet I guess.
You other option is to download the ROM update to your MBP, and then transfer it to the iMac with a flash drive or similar.
As I understand it, you will need that ROM firmware update in order to ensure firewire compatibility between your two Macs.
