Connecting macbook to TV

I am trying to watch online video from my macbook on my tv. I have the connection right (adapter + HDMI cable and sound cable) and I get the picture on my tv, but the internet stops working when the cable is connected. it works for only about 30 seconds. If I disconnect the cable, it continues to work fine. Any ideas on why this is happening??
