I'm trying to copy a free TV pilot downloaded from iTunes onto my iPod Classic. However, the error said something like "TV shows cannot be played on this iPod." I read you have to shorten the title, but it already is short: Justified - Pilot

Plus, I don't think Apple would sell a TV show if the title couldn't transfer to an iPod.

It may be at too high a resolution (HD or TV), you can create a ipod friendly version in iTunes

Select the movie in iTunes, go to the advanced menu and select make version for iPod / iPhone

That option is greyed out when I have the iPod connected and disconnected from my Mac.
