Has anyone successfully upgraded their 2008 Mac Pro CPU to the top of line xeon X5492? I tried several searches here and in google before posting but didn't find much.
I'm running a 2.8 octo harpertown mac pro fully loaded and the only upgrade left for me are my processors. Of course I thought about selling, but after crunching numbers decided I would lose way too much money upgrading to nehalem. Even at $1400 per CPU the upgrade to dual X5492 would be my best bang for performance buck option. Several benchmarks I found on my google searches suggest this final upgrade could get me very close (within 1-2 secs) to the speed of an equally fully loaded octo nehalem 2.93 for almost $4000 less (vs trade-in and re-purchase).
If you've done this upgrade please tell, is this fast benchmark true?
Thanks!
