display problem

My Ibook G4 has a 3 inch horizontal band in the middle of the screen that is much brighter than the top and bottom sections.Displayed characters are hardly readable. An external monitor displays perfectly.

Can anyone suggest the cause of this problem. Is it the inverter, the backlight or the screen itself? Thank you for your reponse
