Just the feature we have all been waiting for - Adverts.

Adverts have already screwed TV so much it is now unwatchable - now they are planning the same on iPad (and iPhone).

True, we get multi-tasking, but what is the point if all the processor power is wasted on adverts?

Anyone else disappointed by OS4 ? :(

It has something to do with embedding adverts into Apps, which implies that processing power will be wasted, slowing the App down - just to provide adverts which the users don't want anyway.

This is all I have found about it so far

Already is a post on these forums about it here. And there I made a very long long post explaining what I think about iad. And in short I think iad is a necessary evil but I am very glad it is Apple doing this and not a 3rd party like Google.

I watched the video about this announcement, and it seems very unobtrusive during normal use, but very powerful if you want to use it. It looks like a win/win to me. but what do I know:D

This is really nothing new anyone who has used Droid or Cydia is already familiar with these types of AD's Apple fanboys (no pun intended) need to get over it, If it brings more cheaper and free apps to the App store that's good for everyone.

I can remember when television channels didn't have their logo or run mini ads in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Advertising of this nature will be coming to the mobile device market soon.

Ads are a part of life. That is fact. Apple just made this necessary evil much more regulated, prettier and interactive. And non flash based. And I think that is a win for everyone.

I know many people can not see this. But I do.

I'm with you on that, I'm sure within a few months there will be hack to block the ads.

So I'm wondering... if I choose to run no apps except what came with the iPhone as shipped from Asia ie: Mail, Calendar, Safari, etc... do I have to watch iAds? If the answer is no, then I see no issue with iAds. If the answer is yes, then it's Socialism and I have no interest in it. If I choose to run no 3rd party apps, why should I be forced to watch iAds to support the developers?

3rd party apps. Steve mentions it in the Keynote. Something about how some are already adding them to their apps (especially the free or cheap ones). The point is if they're going to be there, make them useful, powerful, and enjoyable.

Thanks for the info. If I have a choice, then the iAds don't bother me that much. Much appreciated.

Apparently nobody in this thread has ever downloaded a free app. They all have ads in them (that's why they're free, duh). iAds is nothing more than a way to consolidate those types of ads so they impact on bandwidth and performance LESS. That's it (well, and let Apple make some money off of it too I suppose :)

Much ado about absolutely nothing.

Aside to XJ-linux: you might want to actually look up the words "socialism" and "fascism" so that you can learn that a) they are entirely different concepts, b) neither one has anything whatsoever to do with Apple and c) using the wrong words in a written medium is a quick way to look foolish.

Who said anything about fascism? Replying in a written medium without reading is a quick way to look foolish. Why so serious?

As much as many people seem to think so, Steve Jobs does not = Joseph Stalin or Adolf Hitler. Anyone in business would understand how powerful advertising is. I'm sure all the business minded people out there are loving the iad concept. I'm sure the only thing the business minded people are argueing over is "will I get paid enough using the iad scheme".

Most average people do not understand iad. That's cause it's not made for us. It's made for app developers, business owners, eduction facilities and all of those people. Or on other words people who create content for mobile devices.

And all of us who just consume the content and really create none really feel nothing different from before. Ads were in our lives before iad. And they will be in our lives still after iad. The only difference is iad makes sure only high quality ads are in our lives. And the semi pørn, crappy flash, pyramid scheming ads will slowly become a thing of the past. And I think that is a really good thing.

That's an argument for, or against them? I'm too stupid or ignorant to understand their purpose, and therefore I should just assume they are a good thing?

Ads were in our lives before iad. And they will be in our lives still after iad.

So, since we are blasted with ads constantly already, then they must therefore be a good thing, and more of them are better? Great premise. I'm sold. :)
