It's Official: OS4 multitasking

This is exactly what I suspected wrt the iPad -- people waiting for "gen 2" are going to wait a long time, hardware-wise. Updates will mostly be in software for quite some time to come.

Watch for vastly expanded "cloud" powers coming next year.

Wow...just watched the hour long video of the presentation, incredible. They really rolled out some big changes on this one. So, no new phone/hardware this year??? I'm certainly not complaining, the OS4 is plenty!

Looks good, though kind of bummed I have to wait longer to get it for my shiny new iPad.

So, I keep seeing people on other sites saying this isn't true multitasking; that's it's just fancy task-switching. Someone will have to explain this to me, because if I can listen to music while getting GPS turn directions while talking to someone on Skype, it really seems like my device is doing multiple tasks at the same time! If that isn't multitasking, I don't know what is.

Great! Now it can almost do as much as android 2.1... Little late to the table.

Quote from the Apple iPhone OS 4.0 info:

"Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 3GS and the third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009)."

As a 3G user, that is pretty annoying.
Unfortunately, I can't afford to get a 3GS, so I'm going to be stuck on a second rate OS. :/

Well from what I heard you can load up the OS 4.0 but you older hardwarwe will just miss some of the newer features. Like multi-tasking. If this is true, only time willt ell.

iPhone OS 4.0 will be available for the 3G, just not multitasking, and to be honest, I'm really not surprised at all. My wife is still using the iPhone 3G, and it is pretty sluggish running 3.0, I can't imagine multitasking working well on it at all, it having only half the RAM and slower processor speed compared to the 3GS.

Unless you actually touch the ad and open it, how much processor will it really use? Displaying a static image in HTML 5 (or maybe even a simple animation) uses little to no CPU. Especially if its hardware accelerated to use the GPU as well. I honestly cant see you taking any hit to performance from an ad unless that ad has been clicked and is now running in the foreground.

You should actually read about OS4 a bit more. You will still be able to get 4.0 on your 3G phone, you just won't have multitasking. This makes complete sense because the 3GS has 3 or 4 times more RAM than the 3G, and thus is actually going to be able to background apps. Apple didn't do this to sleight you.

Well this works out nicely for me. This OS should be released right around the time the release the new hardware updates in the summer AND when my contract is up for renewal. New Hardware, new OS and all the bells and whistles...

Maybe. Who's to say there will be a new iPhone this summer? They just released the iPad, so Apple might be delayed on any expected new model.

It is a possibility but if they hold to the schedule that have followed since the iPhones release, something new will come hardware wise in the summer. Heck, I'd be happy with a 3Gs bump to 64Gb even....

One thing i would not count on is Apple sticking to a schedule. They tend to blaze their own trail.

They've been pretty consistent with summer releases/announcements of new iPhone models though. Look at the release dates:

Original: June 29, 2007
3G: July 11, 2008
3GS: June 19, 2009
