FIREWIRE TO USB - please help

would you know is there any way to convert the firewire cable to usb in order to plug a camcorder to a macbook in order to load the footage from a mini dv tape. I urgently need to load some footage but not sure how to go about it if there is no fire wire connection in the computer.

Short answer: no.

There have been a few attempts to create a FW400-to-USB cable: they never worked properly and are long gone.

You need to "urgently" find someone with a Mac with FW400, attach your external hard drive (because you have one OF COURSE) and offload the footage that way. You can then move the drive to your own machine etc.
