So wait, lemmie get something straight here. Aside from all of Apple's restrictions and lock down tactics (which is what made me Jailbreak in the first place), they're now deciding to add insult to injury ! ? That pretty much puts the nail in the coffin for me. If there was any question as to whether or not I'd be switching to an Android based phone, that question was just answered.

I was probably going to do it anyway because I'm deathly bored of the iPhone, so when I move back to the States, I'll likely go VZN. I'll be happy to get unfettered phone tethering back, to say the least. And there's no way I'll miss any of the really ridiculously silly and redundant iPhone apps *see what I did there?* either.

If anybody wants a mint 16 Gig 3G iPhone, let me know. I'll be back in the States sometime in May. It's been in an ELO rubber case since I got it, and has always had a screen protector on it.

Wait, why would Apple going into advertising be such a bad thing? Am I missing something here?

People are worried about intrusive adds in places they didn't have them before, that paid for apps will jump on the advertising bandwagon, and that Apple will track add data, tailor adds to you, and possibly sell that data to other people. You know, the kind of thing people have been putting Google down for doing.

I'm really not interested in advertising on my mobile phone. When I bought it, the iPhone was a creative way to keep from toting a PIM and a Moto RAZR around with me. This pushed advertising sort of overshadows the other new features. Call me a nutjob, but I detest that Big Brother crap. Once Android get's their 9 million OS versions trimmed down a bit, I'll probably switch to whichever handset is cheapest and available on Verizon. As much as I hate to say it, I'm probably going to pass on a new iPhone "4G" whenever it comes along. I've enjoyed my iPhone tremendously, but this iteration kind of tarnishes the whole thing for me.

Of note, they mentioned some features such as multi-tasking will NOT be available on the original iPhone or the 3G. I'm betting you they will, however, find a way to enable iAD on all versions of the iPhone.

I guess my take on it is a bit different , and I am sure Ill get heckled for this but...

Adds are every where we go and lets be honest most are just annoying and ill conceived , There are all ready adds on a great deal of apps both legit ( apple ) and others and that is never going to change. You will find them on every platform of mobile device. I see the money developers can and will make with adds keeping the price of those apps we all love down to an acceptable rate. A developer is more likely to put out a free app and make his money from the adds he sells then to have to gouge the end users.

Now with that said no one wants to be bombarded all the time but if they turn out as was related during the sneak peek today then so be it.

Some apps (CNN and Weather Channel for example) have already been putting adds in. I don't know if this would make that much difference, except the adds may be flashier (pun intended).

I doubt we would see ads popping up in the more premium apps... not if the guys want to keep selling them.

This iad is not as bad as it first seemed to me. It's not like the sleezy ads on the net with flash pics which are nothing about what they are advertising. Sure iad steals a little screen real estate but the ads are fully interactive. And more money in the hands of the developers = more incentive for them to make great apps for the ipad/iphone/touch.

I'm sure this is squarely aimed at developers. But for us consumers it's good too. We get Apple's strict application process. As in Apple will not allow all those adds like the porn ones for evony and pyramid scheme ones. So only quality ads for quality products.

And as much as we hate ads, I can't say I like them either, they have their place. A lot of the content we love and now care about we first discovered via an ad. And without the ad we would have never discovered it and never had hours of enjoyment with said content.

And with interavtive ads, they are like a preview of the app/movie they are trying to sell us. So in a way they are like a demo/preview. WHich is very different to internet advertising which is most times just a link to a particular website. And these demos/previews are very nice. More ways to find the content we will love in the future. The only thing I would ask is that you should not be able to buy the content from the ad. The add should have a preview/demo and also a link to itunes so you can buy the app/movie/song/whatever there. That's just because people on itunes who do not see the ad can buy it. Also then you can see the other people's reviews of the said content on itunes. And then you'll know if the app is really as good as the iad demo. Because I'm sure the iad demp/preview will be the best part of the content as to get you to purchase it.

So personally I am ok with iad as long as they don't get in the way of the UI and are not in paid apps. I pay for them because I want an ad free experience. But for free apps or the internet, I'm ok with apps if they are small, out of the way and not in the rode fo the UI.

I actually applaud Steve for doing this. Why would I say ads are good? Well iad is good cause Steve and Apple are doing it. If not them, then every other app would have their ads in it. And all their sleezy ads. So Steve just took what was going to happen anyway, unified it, removed the crap (through Apple app/ad application process) and made it a better experience all around.

So in short I don't like ads. But if I was to have ads I'd rather iad then 3rd parties doing it. Like on the net, 3rd parties do it and we get google spamming every webpage and at times ruining my UI and porn/other illegeal activity ads like evony.

I didn't intentionally buy a mobile add machine. I didn't intentionally buy a direct conduit to spending money at Apple (iTunes Store or App Store). I bought a phone that could surf the web, hold my PIM information, and run the particular applications that I select. I don't see the "value added" to my personal user experience with iAd. I'd rather buy an unsubsidized phone, ad-free apps and pay for what I actually use. They had better post in BIG letters which apps will now contain adds so I can avoid them.

These things are getting to be like packaged cable TV, where they bundle a bunch of crap in with what you want, to subsidize the crap you don't watch. You have to pay for the 90% crap to get the 10% you want. Or DVD's you buy, where you have to sit through 6 previews, some even for TV shows, to get to the DVD content you purchased. Disney is particularly horrible about this. I really don't want to see an iAd on how to lower my mortgage payment or get out of debt, every tenth time I check the weather report or a stock fund.

I bet we see some successful or unsuccessful lawsuits at some point when someone claims the new OS substantially changes the product they purchased in a material and substantial way, thereby altering the basic nature of the product originally purchased. Maybe they will offer a second OS 4 that lets you opt out of iAd all together. Kind of like Microsoft has to offer multiple browsers as part of Windows in Europe? Just thinking out loud.

If it gets to where I have to jailbreak it to get what I feel I want in a phone, I'll just sell it. (Or blend it!!!)

I agree you do not have to tap the ad and some of my apps already have advertising on them so its no big deal unless its made into one.

Another thing I forgot to say.

Would you rather have free apps with a little advertising or paid apps with no advertising? Someone has to pay the bills and advertising seems to be a good way to do it. And the rumor most paid apps will not have ads. So with more free apps it is looknig better all the time.

That pretty much puts the nail in the coffin for me. If there was any question as to whether or not I'd be switching to an Android based phone, that question was just answered.

Yeah, there will never be an ad on the Android. O:)

PS. hint: you're misunderstanding the nature of iAd pretty seriously. Just FYI.

Seriously, are you guys just not aware that most free apps already HAVE apps in them, and that iAd is just a way to manage them consistently, or what?

iAd is nothing more than Apple imposing a few standards (and a standard delivery method) on ads that already exist on the iPhone.

As opposed to those never-obnoxious, always-welcome Flash ads you get on other phones. Fun.

Paid Apps with no ads - every time.

Somebody in this thread said that the 3G will not get the OS4 - no multitasking? Is that true? I hadn't seen that.

Of course, this means that once Apps move on and need OS4 we are screwed. A load of scrap 3G iPhones and we all have to buy a newer one?

This gets worse and worse. :(

No. iad is not part of the app. It's it's own entity onscreen with the app. So you'll always be able to enjoy your 3G (with every app new or old) add free. But also multitasking free too.
