Hello,

i have had my macbook pro for about a year and a half now, and up to this point i have had very few problems, but now, ever since i just restarted my mac one day, I have been getting the loading pinwheel at random times, even on the user selection screen after boot. im thinking this may be a virus considering i downloaded a couple of programs the other day, but once i get logged in, i can barely do anything. certain applications make the os very slow and others make it ok but still not great. if i do things slowly, it seems to work ok then goes unresponsive again. even when i try going over the dock it sometimes freezes where my mouse last was and that part of the dock stays enlarged.

any help is appreciated, Im not the total mac-wiz so if there is some kind of anti: malware, virus or spyware program that is prefferably free, any word of that would be great.

thanks for any help

p.s. if its in the wrong section, tell me.

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
Welcome to Mac Forums...
Lets cover the basics first.
What are the specs of your Macbook Pro, including HD size, and amount of Ram?
How much space left on your hard drive?
Have you performed any routine maintenance, clearing out caches, repair permissions, etc. ....If not, I suggest running OnyX and using the automation function.
If you are running Snow Leopard, just click the Download link, but if you are running Leopard, then scroll down to the OS X 10.5 download link.
Please post back with info and results after maintenance.

Forget Malware for now look at Network settings.
One area that seems to slow Mac Laptops a bit is the deal where you spend all your operations with it set to Automatic for Location and that probably has so many networks in the cache that the OS has to resolve which data to use each time it makes a connection. My recommendation is after you have done housekeeping per 6string above, set up a couple of Locations for the places that u use the laptop most frequently and if the DNS numbers for that ISP dont show then add them to Sys Prefs > Network > Advanced - 10.5 & 10.6

There are no Mac viruses. Whatever your problem actually is, it's not that.

Is your hard drive approaching full? Do you have eleventy-hundred GB of stuff sitting out on your desktop?

What does Activity Monitor have to say about your CPU use during these "slow" moments?

There are several Trojans which can be avoided by staying away from porn sites and torrent downloads, however, there are no viruses in the wild which can infect a Mac. If you know of one, post the link to it.

I have the same problem with random freezes..

It is primarily when using video or iPhoto.
I have cleared cache and repaired permissions which helped somewhat... maybe....
I ran console today while watching a video and this seems to be the message that occurs when it happens.
