iPhone not syncing

Hi:
I moved my iPhone 3G (fw 3.0) from a PC to a Mac. First I chose the option to transfer my apps from the iPhone to iTunes. I wasn't importing any music into my iPhone (I have an iPod linked with another computer for that), but now I want some music on my iPhone.
I have set the iPhone settings in iTunes to sync all applications and sync music as well. It gave the standard message about erasing the iPhone and I chose OK to that (since I had no music on my iPhone and the apps were the same in iTunes after transferring them). It goes through the syncing process but nothing gets transferred to my iPhone--I downloaded a free app in iTunes to test--but after syncing it is not on my iPhone. Also, none of the music in iTunes (that plays fine in iTunes) gets moved to my iPhone.
What gives?
