While sweeping my HD i found that there is a ~/PRIVATE/var/vm/sleepimage file of about 4.1GB.
Is it safe to delete this file to free disk space?

It will simply rebuild that file. That is the file used to restore your computer from safe sleep.

You should not be messing about in PRIVATE unless you know exactly what you are doing.

Here is an article on Sleep mode - link.
