I have a Macbook Air rev. A, that I just finished replacing the hinges, LVDS cable, and LCD. After being reassembled and having a fresh install of snow leopard installed on the HDD, I am now having kernel panic problems.

The computer boots up just fine, but then there are two cases where the kernel panic freezes up the computer. If in the Display settings, the option is checked for display to automatically set the brightness, the KP screen comes up if i shine a flashlight at the isight/ambient light sensor, or if the lights in the room are just bright to begin with. If this setting is unchecked then the KP does not come up. The second case, is that whether or not the Automatic brightness setting is checked, if I use the Brightness keys at the top of the keyboard, as soon as it is set to the full setting the KP screen comes up, and I am forced to reboot.

I have swapped out the isight/Ambient Light Sensor with one from another MB Air, but it did not change anything. Has anyone ever had anything like this happen to their Macbook? I am having a hard time figuring out what the **** is going on inside of this thing. I do not have a applecare warranty, so bringing it to them is not really an option. Could the Logic Board cause this type of event to happen? Does the Logic Board even have anything to do with the LCD Brightness setting or Ambient Light Sensor?

Thanks in advance for any insight

where did you get the parts from?

you know apple probably has proprietary hinges even, lol;
if something is unrecognized or not tested with the graphics controller this could cause a kernel panic

The low voltage tech in me says you have a short some where as the KP is triggered by screen adjust either manually or auto . I would start my trouble shooting with the LVDS cable.

Hope it helps

Does anybody know how to interpret this?
This is the KP Log:

it seems like the drivers are causing the kernel panic, even if they installed fine;
were the parts intended for your specific model of MBA?
or are they interchangeable with other macbook models, or intended for other models?
in that output, it seems like everything is fine except for some conflict with the drivers that were installed;
actually as i look over it, it seems like there may be some need for the driver dependencies that i would guess are on a pro or unibody but dont come standard on the air, particularly:
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily
dependency: com.apple.driver.AppleSMC

from all the 'researching' i did on the internet, and making some calls, I found that all of the macbook air's use the same LCD screen. I checked the Model number on the back of the LCD anyway, and its the same exact model number manufactured by A.U. Optronics.

I ended up buying a whole top clamshell from another macbook air that included the LCD, Aluminum backplate, LVDS cable, mic cable, and hinges. I installed that and did a format and install of Snow Leopard, which went fine, with no errors, but now i have all these kernel panics.

so far i have found that if i raise the LCD backlight brightness to full i get a KP every time. If i try to use the iSight camera, as soon as it starts recording, I get a KP every time, if I set the computer to automatically set the LCD backlight brightness, if any light is shined on the Ambient Light Sensor, I get a KP everytime.

Its quite frustrating to have a working laptop, but with things that you CANNOT do bc it will crash every time.

apparently you are quite confident in the physical parts themselves and their sources;
if 10.6 installs fine, and the monitor works to a certain extent, enough to allow you to install 10.6, this has been the same problem between two different display assemblies and fresh installs, the parts are correct and supported or at least tested by apple;
then you have a problem with the hardware somewhere between where the display connects (parts that were replaced twice by yourself) passing through the graphics controller, to the MB;
i am not very familiar with the specifics in hardware between macbook air and your average desktop;
but the circumstances you described would lie somewhere in:
connection from display==>graphics controller==>bus==>MB
unless i am misunderstanding,a: you tried two different display assemblies and got the same problem, b: monitor works initially after POST, c: tried more than one fresh installs of 10.6 after which the monitor works to a certain extent;

you got it right. after installing the second lcd, and after installing 10.6 freshly mulitple times, I am still stuck with the problems I described above.

The macbook air comes with a version of 10.5 that is solely made for the Air. Could the version of Snow Leopard that I have be causing the problems bc it is not made specifically for the Air?

Same trouble

Hi,

I had the same issue. and have search around for a solution.

Get Kernel panic when:
- brightness to maximum (or second last)
- using camera (after install) camera works fine when registering after fresh install. Photobooth wants to take a picture for profile and this works fine.
Using photobooth after setup, fails into kernel panic.
- also seen that if computer is active all day turns into kernel panic.
(probably the ambient light sensor triggering brightness)

I was thinking this could have something to do with OSX update.
I installed 10.6.2 -> the patched and updated.
But it also happens with a fresh install. :-(

I have checked rom updates, and I believe that my system is up to date.

I have a second hand macbook air rev a (macbook 1.1 x3100)
Probably with a changed LCD hinges. (see marks after opening the monitor, so this is not apple work. They always replace the hole screen.)

Anyone found a solution to the problem.

My solution for the moment:
- disable ambient light sensor (in control panel)
- not using the camera (could be removed from OS, some solutions out there for moving some files around)
- keep from turning brightness to max. (may be it also could be tuned not to go into max with some software?)

But if anyone found the correct fix, please let me know.
I am hoping that a patch could fix this issue. Since the camera actually is working before setup is run. :)

Just tested with photoboot again, hangs, but the camera works fine.
Something happens when the image is to be taken. Then the kernel panics appears.

Maybee it adjust some settings with brightness or something to make the image better.? I do not think the camera is the problem, but some command it runs when capturing the image.

Excactly the same kernel panic as if I adjust the brightness to max manually:
panic(cpu 1 caller 0x34dc76b6): "IG: Invalid backlight duty cycle value"@/SourceCache/GraphicsDrivers/GraphicsDrivers-6.18.18/Common/GLKernel/Intel/IntelIntegratedFramebuffer/IntelGMAX3100FB.cpp:7189

Partly figured out...

I have two macbook air (original Jan 2008) laptops. I bought them to fix them, as both just needed LCDs. I erased the HD and installed snow leopard 10.6 and ran updates to 10.6.8 and then installed Lion, on both. This is the point when I was lucky to suffer the same kernel panic with the brightness as well as when a photo is taken in photobooth. I thought it was the LCD, cable, or whatever. I never thought it would be software.

I decided to reinstalled the OS that came on the original disks for the Air. It came with 10.5.2 Leopard with the software on disk 2 (iLife, etc...). After reinstalling from those disks, BOTH computers work PERFECT! No Panics at all.

HOWEVER, this is why I said "Partly figured out"... As soon as I attempt to install any update to update to 10.5.8 via software update or even install 10.6 from a disk image, it'll update, then give me the kernel panics again on brightness and photobooth photo taking (which causes the screen to flash bright white for the "flash")

So if anyone has any idea how to upgrade the original Macbook Air past what came in the box on the DVDs which were included, that'd be great!! It definitely seems like the Updates screw up some kext (drivers) that conflict or delete the ones that came on the Macbook Air specific DVDs.

I know it's an old thread, but if anyone erases their HD and tries to install 10.6 or 10.7 this should happen to everyone...

Any ideas???

Same problem

So I realize this thread is a tad old but I did happen to stumble upon it today (and noticed someone posted yesterday!).

I've had the same problem as you guys. I'll post a TL - DR at the bottom for those who don't want to read the whole story ;D (and I'm a new Mac-Forums user(usually use macrumors); so please go easy on me!).

I like to fix things. I fix macbooks, mac pros, imacs, iphones, ipods, etc (and other electronics.. just prefer macs). I do it for fun as a hobby (currently in college). I'm not a trained apple tech, but I learn quickly (I've posted several of my "fix-its" on Youtube. Back in the summer of 2011, I was visiting my relatives in Colorado and someone had a macbook air (1st gen model) for sale. It had a broken screen. "Perfect" I thought! So I bought it. It turns out that some kid (about my age.. late teens/early 20's) said he'd charged it and it turned on when he checked it but it wasn't turning on for me (and he did have pictures posted on his craiglist ad of it working). So I bargained and managed to get him to drop the price. I bought it, took it back to my relatives and tested it out. I plugged it it and it turned on! Unplugged it and it immediately shut down. I figured it just needed a new screen and new battery. I ordered them online and had them sent to my home in Washington where they were waiting for me when I got back a week later.

Went to take it apart, and guess what, it didn't need a battery - when the kid dropped it and broke the screen, the battery was disconnected (hence why it worked when it was plugged in). I replaced the screen and installed a fresh copy of Snow Leopard on it. I went back to school and kept it in my room. Contemplating selling it online; thought about keeping it because it's neat (even though I already have a macbook). Well, I finally decided to sell it but tested it out and got TONS of kernel panics (hadn't touched it since I fixed it).

I brought it to apple and the techs were pretty helpful. Turns out the HDD was failing. SO I bought one of those to fix that (APPLE WAS GOING TO CHARGE $400 TO REPLACE IT SINCE IT'S OUT OF WARRANTY... the 1st gen model is only worth about 400! lol)

Fixed that and reinstalled the OS again. It seems to be working fine. However, I just tested the OP's theory of ambient light sensor and brightness and I got a KP! It actually made me laugh pretty hard!

TL -DR - Bought broken MBA 1st gen, fixed screen and installed SL. Didn't touch it for months. Turned it on got tons of Kernel Panics, replaced HDD (NOT with a SSD..just a regular HDD). Reinstalled SL (again). Worked fine until I got one more KP and saw "invalid back light". Googled that - came here, tested ambient light sensor and brightness, got KP! Laughed.

Anyone solve this problem yet? I am posting from the MBA right now, however. Giggling on the inside.

Same situation with my Macbook Air Gen A. After replacing the display I started immediately to experience Kernel Panics at full brightness. So I decided to upgrade to snow leopard with the same results. Then downgraded to Leopard with identical results.
So I installed the original OSX that came with my computer and voila !! no Kernel panics.
The version I installed was 10.5.4, 9E25 refered in the following link : Mac OS X versions (builds) for computers
You can get this version after googling in rapidshare.

Now, I'm looking for a way to upgrade to snow leopard or at least 10.5.8.

If you have similar experiences please share with us.

After fresh installing OSX 10.6 build 10A432 I got again the Kernel panics when increasing brightness to 100%. I have to uninstall it and return to 10.5.4 build 9E25
If you have found a version that works at full brightness, please let me know.

Same exact issue as you guys are having

I have replaced everything - screen, logic board, upper case with keyboard, LVDS cable, its pretty much brand new by now. Same here - if I restore to original install dics to 10.5.2 - works perfectly - no KP's at all. If I go beyond that I get KP's same as you.

I went to apple store today and they spent an hour with me on it - no resolution - the only thing they recommended is to send it in for flat rate repair - which I am considering at this point. It just blows my and the genius' mind that it will work with no issue on 10.5.2 but not past that. Not sure what changed after 10.5.2 but I wish someone could shed some light on it as it appears that with these units aging now and more repairs coming in place that the issue is starting to show up more.

Please let me know if anyone is making any more progress on this. I will post back if I make any headway

Hi Guys!

I have the same issue now with my MacBook Air. This is the first Air too, what is released in 2008 Jan. It has a KP on 100% brightness.

I know, this is an old topic, but i hope in meantime the problem is solved.
