USB powered hard drive with ibook G4 make and model

Is anybody running a USB powered hard drive successfully with an ibook G4. The reason I ask is that all I want to do is format it to FAT32 to use with my PS3 (again to be usb powered only). I did buy a WD passport but that didn't have enough power so I bought a Lacie firewire for my mac, did use a iomega one with 2 usb plugs didn't work until I put in a power cable which froze the machine until i removed the power cable and the drive then worked?!! If you are running one without any external supply can you tell me the make and model.
