Hi,

My Macbook pro 15 inch is just out of warranty. It has been freezing and was initially coming up with the black screen.

After pressing command option p + r during start up on several occasions, it started to load correctly however froze at the apple logo or at the spinning circle.

I tried to reinstall snow leopard which started successfully, however the screen went back to the grey screen with the frozen spinning circle.

I brought it to a mac service centre and they said it was an issue with the lcd screen and this needed to be replaced. I would have thought it would have been an OS or hard drive issue and something tells me that this isn't really correct.

Your advice is much appreciated.

Regards.

Have you tried an Apple Store just for a second opinion.

Are you sure they said it was the LCD screen which needed replacement? It sounds more like a problem with the graphics processor chipset (GPU) which would require a logic board replacement.

You can test this yourself at home. Hook up an external monitor to your MBP (if no external monitor, you can use a TV) and check to see if the same problem occurs. If the machine is freezing and the black screen shows up on the external monitor, then you know it is not the LCD.

Regards.
