I'm looking to buy a Ibook Clamshell 300MHZ. The one I am looking at has a 3GB harddrive and 288MB of memory. It is running MacOS 9. I have two questions.

1) What are the requirements for me to be able to run Panther? (Not Tiger)
2) Is it possible to upgrade the harddrive, and if it is would I be able to take it to an Apple Specialist?

Thanks

To run Panther, you're going to want a larger hard drive and some additional RAM. Check out OWC or MacSolutions for the memory. As for the hard drive, it should be something you can do yourself, as long as you're comfortable working on computers. Here is a link that you might find helpful when upgrading the HDD: http://caslis.com/mac/ibook/ibdrive.html

What about Jaguar? Would that be able to work? And according to a Crucials Memory website 288MB is the most the 300mhz can have.

The 3 GB hard drive is going to be quite cramped regardless of whether you're running Jaguar or Panther, and the same goes for the RAM. The "official" limit for that model is indeed 288 MB, but my research indicates that you can install a 512 MB stick and it will function just fine.

I would suggest that if you have no need for the additional language support in OS X that you do a custom install without those. That will free up some Hard drive space. I second as much ram as you can throw at it! In stead of tearing into the clamshell, i would consider an external USB hard drive. I haven't torn mine apart, but i've heard it can be tricky. After all it is 5 or so years old and connections and wires can become brittle. I wouldn't risk it, just my 2 cents.

I purchase Memory from Crucial Canada, what 512MB chip would I buy from their website? Or would the 512MB chips for the Ibook G4's work?
