Question: Desktop HDicon Placement

Hello,

I hope this is in the correct section- if not, I apologize. I just have a question about the Hard Drive icon on my desktop- What I've noticed is that it always moves itself back to the upper right-hand side of my desktop automatically when I start up my mac, even after I move it to, say, the center of my screen.

Is there a way to make it stay?

Thanks.

I haven't tested it because I'm having something to eat now, but go to the Finder, select desktop, click the actions button at the top of the window then click 'show view options,' and uncheck the 'arrange icons by:' button. Let me know if it works please.

Nope doesn't work. That box is left unchecked anyway. Anyone else?

Not to me! I prefer it elsewhere. Actually, I just want to find out why the HD icon and the newly mounted disk images and ipods and network drives only mount to the the top right corner and not the top left. and if they are moved to a specific spot, why do they always re-mount in the corner and not the same spot.

Anyone got any idea?

****. I also would like a solution to this, benjamindaines, you say they're more accesinle in the corner, but for an iBook user, having my iPod icon in the bottom right would make unmounting the device a lot easier because I wouldn't have to drag it as far which can be a pain when in a hurry and using the trackpad.

Because this is the default behavior. :mac:

Volumes of any kind mount as close as possible to the top-right. If that position is full, they go down and then left until an open spot is found.

Folders or documents can be left anywhere, but volumes do not remember their placement. The logic behind this is shrouded in antiquity; it pre-dates the existence of hard disks. Long ago, a computer had no way of "remembering" which drives would be mounted, so each drive was/is detected and mounted individually.

Unfortunately, there is no known way to change this.

Thanks for the answer technologist. It's not really a big deal for me, though it would be nice to have the option of leaving my HD icon where I want =P

While what technologist says is true, I would still like the ability to say "start in this corner and add new volumes in this direction". Such as start in the bottom left and add new volumes horizontally.

I ended up just removing all icons from my desktop because of this. I prefer my desktop to be clean anyway.

i dont have no mac's
i usually have just a few icons on my desktop for random stuff (i use it as a temp file holder for files i will be keeping for like 8 minutes or so and then BALETED!)...anyhoo...when i run dual monitors on my PB i would like everything to be in the upper left so i dont have my icons in the middle of my screen

edit: think that a company like unsanity could make a 'haxie' or other program to do this?
