MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846:stopped reading

I was burning a cd on my PowerBook G4 17" Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L31a) when the drive stopped reading and started to make loud noises. now i can't read any disk or dvds. not even showing on the deck top.

can anyone help?

Matshita drives fail regularly. It looks like you'll need to replace the optical drive, but with a different brand, Pioneer recommended. Search YouTube for videos on how to go about changing the optical drive in a Powerbook.
