I have some questions on what way I should go.

I purchased a used iphone 2g off craigslist the lower half of the screen is not working.

Is it worth asking apple if they would exchange it for a working unit. There is no apple care on the unit that I know of.

Or is my only course of action to replace the screen/digitizer?

Per the rules of this forum, we can't discuss unlocking/jailbreaking here. I'm not saying this to be unhelpful, but to help you avoid getting into trouble.

It is certainly worth ASKING Apple, though they will absolutely certainly say "no." They may, however, offer to replace it for a modest fee (a couple hundred or so).

I cannot imagine why anyone would pay money for a non-working iPhone, or consider using it if half the screen doesn't work. That surely renders it more or less inoperable?

I think they swap them out for $100 or $200.
