I am looking at buying an ipod touch and have heard that you can only transfer songs to the ipod that you have bought. Is this true or false?.

I have lots of music that I ripped from my CD collection on my external drives and listen to them on itunes with no issues. So I can only imagine that I have been told wrong?.

I do not mind paying for music on the itunes store, but would really like to put my already existing collection on there as well.

I have an iPod Classic, and I have no problem putting the MP3s I have ripped from my CDs on it.

That is blatantly false.

Just to be totally clear, what Bob means is that what neonmac heard is blatantly false, not what Chef_eam said.

I don't know who spreads all this BS about Apple products, its kind of ridiculous.

What he said...

You can't load ogg or flac files on them, at least not natively, but pretty much anything that will play in iTunes without a plug in, can be moved to your iPod.

Thanks for the clarification on this.

I was actually told by ipod users that you can only put music you have bought from itunes store on to the ipod. It did not seem right, so I thought I would ask.

I have video, music and audio books from my own CDs, iTunes, Amazon, Magnatune, Audible, Gutenberg, and many others.
