Stupid first post, I know, but:

I recently mounted my Verizon Droid to my computer. All was dandy and I was dragging and dropping various files onto its mounted SD card. When I went to rename it a few minutes ago I accidentally hit "remove from sidebar" instead and now it's no longer listed in finder, mounted or not. I've tried unmounting through the phone, disconnecting the USB cable and looking around in OS X but have had no luck.

I did some brief googling but had no luck, anyone know the answer? Thanks!

Finder > Preferences > Sidebar, see if Removable Devices is shown there, and if so, is it checked?

PS. It's always helpful to post your Mac specs and the OS version you're using.

I'm sorry - 24" iMac OS X Snow Leopard.

And no, it's not there both when it is and isn't plugged in.

You say you've been "looking around in OS X" Does that include Disk Utility? And can you try with a completely different Mac? Also a Win machine. See if you can extract the files you cross-loaded, and then reformat the SD card completely.

My thinking is that the renaming of the external device may have 'confused' the Finder in your Mac.

I accidentally removed my external storage from the "device" sidebar and could not find it anywhere!!!!! Very frustrating!!

I then stumbled onto MY answer (which I hope will solve yours too)!!

Under Finder Preferences, Sidebar tab, make sure box for "Computer" is checked.
Go back to the Finder window and click on your "computer" name.
In the right window pane, I saw my device listed! (Yeah!)
Click and drag your missing device onto your desired sidebar location.

Hi all,

I have the same problem. I accidentally removed my flash drive from both desktop and finder. But I can't even find the "Finder Preferences" window. Any ideas?

To find Preferences for (almost) every application that has a Preferences option...

While you have the application open, click on the application name in the Menu bar at the top of your screen.

e.g. Did you click on 'Finder' in the Menu bar?

Maybe I'm not translating properly (again) but, if the flash drive doesn't appear on the Desktop, unplug it and plug it back in.

"Removed" = Ejected ?

"from Finder"... oh, nevermind

THIS REPLY HELPED ME. I ACCIDENTALLY REMOVED MY IPAD. I COULD SEE IOS DEVICES UNDEER THE FINDER>PREFERENCES BUT IT WAS RED LIKE THE OTHERS, BUT WHEN I LOOKED CLOSER, IT HAD A "MINUS" SIGN (-) IN FRONT OF IT... APPLE SHOULD CHANGE THE COLLOR.. IT WOULD BE EASIER TO SPOT... I CLICKED ON IT AND IT TURNED TO A "PLUS" SIGN (+) AND IT CAME UP ON THE SIDEBAR...

Cool! That post is from more than 11 years ago, and it still has value.

Thank you sir! This was driving me nuts!

Quick check-in to say this solution still works.
